RTW: Noooo--Not The Special Hell!

Road Trip Wednesday is a "Blog Carnival," where YA Highway's contributors and followers post a weekly writing- or reading-related question and answer it on their blogs. You can hop from destination to destination and get everybody's unique take on the topic.

This week's topic: This Week's Topic, to prepare for our Bookmobile chat about INCARNATE with author Jodi Meadows next Tuesday, July 31:
If you could be reincarnated as any fictional character, which would it be?
I almost didn't answer this one, because my first (and short) thought was, "All the books I like have Very Bad Things happen to the characters--why would I sign up for that!"
And I definitely wouldn't want to come back as one of the characters in my books--I love to torture them. Not necessarily physically, but with all kinds of embarrassing situations.

And that got me thinking: do you think that's what Hell is like for writers? We're forced to live through all those plot twists we thought were so very clever when we wrote them? I hope not, because I'm really in for it otherwise . . .

Feel free to put a link to your post in the comments if you played along with Road Trip Wednesday. Don't forget to go to the YA Highway post and read all the answers!

Hmmm... maybe I should be nicer to my characters...? Uhh, no. Sorry, but that's just not going to happen. As much as I like them, I'm not going to have them eating chocolate and watching Doctor Who all day. I have too many interesting plots to foist upon them. And I think they're more than up to meeting the challenge. :)

Living through your own plot twists?! That would be a hell worthy of the ancient Greeks!

Here's my RTW.

So...I started thinking about it and I realized that I actually wouldn't mind living as a few of my characters. I had one that was an eventing rider after all.

Maybe I'm too nice to them?

Haha! That's a scary thought. I sure as heck hope not. :)

LOL I definitely would NOT want to be any of my fictional characters....they are either so angry or so depressed! Oi vey. You've definitely got me thinking, Angelica, but I was still able to choose a character I'd want to be - Thursday Next a literary detective. :-)

Haha! Yes, we do torture our chars a lot, don't we? I suppose it'd be karma for writers to suffer from their own torturous writing, but I wouldn't sign up for that either.

When I finally chose a character he STILL had a lot of bad happen to him, but he's epic, so that outweighed it for me. http://dverted.blogspot.com/2012/07/rtw-reincarnation-or-regeneration.html

That thought is terrifying. But still the more screwed up our characters life is the better the story. :D

LOL, what a terrible sort of torture that would be! I'm of the mind that hell would be something like the Vogon ship in 'Hitchiker's Guide'. Producing forms in triplicate, filing, than returning everything on time would be my own personal form of hell. Great post!

Hahah, that is so true! If I would have to go through what all my characters go through I would die!

Whew, took a while but I think I made all the rounds! And it sounds like I've struck a nerve with my Writer's Hell scenario . . .

Wow, living our characters' lives...that's a clever twist. In fact, it sounds like a great technique to keep the tension strong--keep thinking of yourself as them in Hell (moohaha)

Man, that *would* be a diabolical punishment! I can't think of any of my characters I'd want to be, except maybe the magical cat in my first (trunked) novel.
